"this is my love letter to the women and filipinos."

- John Marcus

design inspiration.

The designer’s latest collection took inspiration from Korean pop music culture – specifically from the girl group TWICE’s song entitled “Feel Special”. The latter touched the designer’s heart leading him to dig deeper into it and have a broader understanding of the meaning.

“Everything’s alright, from nobody to somebody, I turn into someone special…

you make me feel special.”

- TWICE

As a K-pop fan and a music enthusiast, the designer was enlightened by the straightforwardness of the song’s lyrics – making someone feel special – making him reflect on what makes him feel like so and how he can englobe it into a fashion collection.

Upon pondering the question, he concluded with three reasons that hold a special place in his heart and make him feel this way:

First, on the list are his family and friends. His loved ones are Filipinos. They remind him of his roots and identity as a Filipino born and raised in Hong Kong. In particular, his nationality makes him unique and stand out as an individual and a designer due to the duality of his nature: his exposure to Hong Kong’s international environment mixed with his “pinoy” roots and culture. This allows the designer to make this his main reference point, a way of cultural representation. This reason enables the designer to reference the Filipino Culture as a representation of his family and friends as a key visual inspiration.

Secondly, today’s women make the designer feel special. He grew up with the influence of strong and tenacious women, particularly his Mama Helen (grandmother), Mommy Natalie (mother), Auntie Julita, and feminist musicians like Lady Gaga & Beyoncé. According to the designer, women, and especially their loved ones, are just like flowers. They go through different circumstances – natural disasters, pollution, weather, etc., all portraying problems and obstacles – yet they grow, strive, and bloom no matter what. Today's issues like lack of women’s rights, job opportunities, healthcare, etc. are prominent examples that women fight today. These women in his life molded him to be the man he is today – to be a fighter and to continue blooming in his life. This fashion collection is a love letter and celebration of their lives. This reason is visually represented through flowers and the use of a women’s wear line.

Lastly, painting makes the designer feel special because for him, symbolically, each painting is unique and different from other paintings. He sees life as if it was a painting created by God, with a unique style, color palette, different techniques, and a personal story. Therefore, completely diverse from other paintings, or other people’s lives. In regards to the idea of feminism, the designer was reminded of the work of feminist artist Georgia O’Keeffe. She is a painter of sensuality and power. Her usage of flowers, portrayed as a Vagina if looked closer, promotes the idea of raising awareness of womanhood and freedom to her audience. He believes her work is much needed to reference and amplify the message. This reason is another vital visual inspiration for the fashion collection to reference paintings of the feminist American artist Georgia O’Keeffe.

These 3 key elements are the fashion collections’ main inspiration. It is a story represented through a women’s wear collection, inspired by:

- Filipino culture

- Womanhood

- Painting

Through them, the story of today’s women unfolds, a story of representation, belonging, and empowerment.

what is Maharlika?

“Maharlika” translates to “royalty” in modern Filipino.

The theme, “Maharlika” can be simply described in 3 words:

Filipino = ‘Cultural Representation’

Feminine = ‘A feminist point of view

Formality = ‘Sense of power & firmness’

The purpose is to incorporate the sense of regality and highlight women’s beauty and queenship, a visual representation of what feminism looks like through his eyes.

The theme revolves around the aim to make women feel royal yet powerful, tackling timely and current issues by referencing Filipino Feminism through elements of the iconic women's national garment called the “Maria Clara” gown, nowadays called “Filipiniana”. The Filipiniana dress is characterized by its graceful flow, vibrant colors, and intricate details. It often features floral or nature-inspired patterns, as well as intricate beadwork or embroidery. The dress is designed to emphasize the natural beauty of the Filipina woman, with its form-fitting bodice and flowing skirt. Additionally, it is often accompanied by ornate accessories, such as a fan, a parasol, and jewelry made from gold or silver. Overall, the Filipiniana dress is a beloved symbol of the Philippines' rich cultural heritage and serves as a representation of the country's unique identity. The national costume played a big role in the country’s culture and women’s rights movement since the dress gave many Filipino women a sense of identity.

One of the primary goals of Filipino Feminism is to address the gender-based flaws of the oppressive system, push for equality between men and women, and create better opportunities for women in various fields, including politics, education, employment, and business. On top of that, not only does it touch locally but it echoes into something global as well.

Fortunately, despite the battles that are still being fought today, also on an international level – such as gender equality, sexual abuse and harassment, child marriage, women’s autonomy, equality, and reproductive health and the ones mentioned before – the role of women in today’s world has changed significantly and for better. Today's women are firm, well-aware, and financially independent. They have attained immense success in every field, whether it is sports, entertainment, politics, or academics. But, more is yet to come.

Coco Chanel, the feminist fashion designer, has always encouraged women who wear her products that “The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.” Her visual interpretation of what it means to be firm is what feminism looks like, a strong sense of formality, ready to handle business.

The mission of this womenswear line collection is to hope that the women feel like a blooming flower – an extraordinary flower like no other and empower them all at the same time. Therefore, MAHARLIKA is so much more than a beautiful fashion collection as it echoes into something grander: fighting for women to globally dismantle cultural and socio-political attitudes that undermine the worth and value of today’s women, everything through the fashion collection’s message.

The "𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙡" is a two-piece garment that consists of a one-sided bishop sleeve barong crop top and sweetheart jumpsuit with flared pants. The body of the top is a contemporary take on the traditional men's barong since it is a crop top with an asymmetrical cut; it has ruffle trimmings; and the buttons are replaced with a grommet lacing, with hand braided laces. The barong crop top has a gradation effect from light pink to a darker tone of the same color.

The sweetheart tweed jumpsuit with flared pants is covered with flower-laced patchwork with a cascading effect towards the right leg, while the left leg has a high knee slit with flowerlike ruffles referencing O'Keeffe's paintings.
